My son loves books. Absolutely LOVES them. We've given him books as birthday gifts, books as bathroom entertainment, books while waiting patiently for Lily's diaper to get changed, books in the car, books in his room, and books in the playroom. Because storytime is funtime around here!
And sometimes, storytime is just absolutely necessary to practice patience. For him...and for me. :)
There's nothing like a book to engage my son in a few minutes of wonder, imagination, and fascination. We have big books and small books, and also teeny weeny books that I keep in our diaper bag, and also in my purse for that spur of the moment storytime. The entertainment of a book lasts so much longer than the book itself because afterwards we'll talk about the book, and giggle, and draw and play and often pretend we're the characters in the books, and act out the events in the story. Not to mention the learning involved lasts forever, of course.
Here is a list of 12 things you can do to help your preschooler learn to read:

Joey always remembers the titles of the books he has read too! He really enjoys going to the library and on the way there he'll often ask for a book we read months ago. It's really cute how he remembers the titles!
I've always been a big fan of Dr. Seuss books, and I started reading them to Joey -- and then also to Lily -- when I was pregnant with each of them. This one in particular always made me cry (extra) while pregnant: "Oh the Places You'll Go". It's really a wonderful little read:
I recall a Dr. Seuss book from my childhood....I'm pretty sure it was one of the books we read in my kindergarten class. We would have an individual reading time where each child in the class would wear their own super huuuuge black earphones, and listen to the book on audio cassette with an oversized tape-recorder, and while listening to the story and following along in the book, there would be a very annoying BEEEEEEP which would mean to turn the page of the book, in order for us to follow along. The book was entitled something like "They call me Red."-- I think that's from "Hop on Pop?" I remember it being hilarious, and will search for that title for Joey.
I was ecstatic last year when my sister sent Joey the Dr. Seuss book "Mr. Brown....can..." and wow have we read that book a bajillion times:
When we're not reading books aloud, Joey likes to reads books by himself. Joey has been reading the above book all the way thru for the past six months. Joey's 3 now, so he doesn't actually "read" the words, but he'll flip thru the book, page by page, and summarize the story on each page, often reciting the exact words in a sentence such as "Mr. Brown can Moo, can you?"------ all of which is so important as a pre-reader.
