While growing up in NYC, there was no such thing as blueberry farms -- without driving for hours. And now? We can find a blueberry farm just a few minutes from home!
We're frequenting Snikroc Farm, it's a self service farm found off the intersection of Wake Forest Road / Hwy 98 and Sherron Road in Durham, just down the block from the CVS, at 5220 Wake Forest Highway between the Crossings & Falls Village golf courses.
We just happened to find it whle driving down that highway and seeing this cute little sign:
See that road? Yep, that's a highway. :)
Snikroc Farm has 4 different types of blueberries. 4 different types! I had to look that one up. Who knew there existed different types of blueberries?? Not this city girl.
Blueberries are available in June til late July. At the farm, little baskets are supplied for your picking pleasure - but you'll need to return those when you're done, so don't forget to bring your own basket or bag to transport those yummies home!
When you're done picking blueberries, you weigh them yourself in the hanging scale, check the chart for the cost, then slip the payment thru the slot in the door...which means cash or checks are accepted, but no credit cards. It's a small family-owned farm so I think adding an extra little tip is a nice gesture just to say thanks.
Here's Joey picking blueberries while reciting "red not ripe" and "blue for you". Look at my big boy, how cute is he??!!
It's nice to have my very own blueberry-picker. Sure beats the other things a 3 year old is usually found picking. If you know what I mean.
Oh! When we drove up to the farm we passed a little ice-cream trailer/stand which was closed for the morning...but they do serve soft-serve ice-cream later in the day from 4pm - 9:30pm on Saturdays, and weekdays from 6:30pm - 9:30pm which I later found out from this site. So we're headed back to Snikroc Farm this week for some much needed ice-cream, with blueberries on top!
Blueberry picking with the kiddos is so much fun! Much more fun than picking up a container at the supermarket, and healthier too! We finished all the blueberries that day, but next time we'll be sure to pick more and make these yummy blueberry pancakes.
While picking blueberries we enjoyed some time in the sun (don't forget your kid-friendly sunblock!) Plus nice photo opportunities, and calming for the Mama. There were just two other people there picking blueberries, and both Lily at 13mos and Joey at 3 years had plenty of space and fun.
Joey was running through the farmland, spent some moments deciding which berries to pick, and keeping the basket twenty feet away from the kids helped them burn off some energy. Joey could only hold so many blueberries in his hand without squishing them, so he knew had to make several trips to the basket every few minutes, in order to drop off the blueberries. A nice little amount of exercise. Hehe. It's really just the little things that help. We were only there for an hour, but by the time we got home they were both ready for an early nap. I filled their little tummies with lunch and blueberries and they slept for 2 and a half hours. That is a full half hour longer than usual!
So I topped of my lunch with a nice healthy dose of cool antioxidants and enjoyed this super delicious yummy fresh summery salad...and some quiet Mama time.
"Quiet Mama time"...haha...which means I was probably on Etsy. :)
